PECOS, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – 2019 started with tragedy for many at Pecos High School as the district, football team and the community lost two of their very own.

Jonathan Aguilar and Ethan Medina were standout football players for the Eagles.

In January, the pair were headed to Andrews to cheer on the Pecos basketball team. According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Medina and Aguilar were traveling on FM 866 near Highway 302.

DPS officials say they failed to yield at the intersection and collided with a semi-truck.

Both were killed in the crash, the report reads. It was a turn of events many in Pecos never expected and one that left a large hole in the hearts of the community.

Despite the tragedy, the community remembered their friends and fellow teammates as leaders in the classroom and on the field.

Both were described as fierce friends, loyal teammates and good people who always had smiles on their faces.

While they were not on the football field with the Eagles in 2019, the team honored their lost friends and kept their memory alive through an unforgettable football season in Pecos.
