New mail system for ECSO

How new tablets will increase safety

ODESSA, Texas (BIG 2/ FOX 24)- There are new improvements are on the horizon for the Ector County Sheriffs Office.

ECSO Sheriff Mike Griffis saying “we’ve got a kiosk installed in the cell, the inmate has a password to access that kiosk. The inmate mail will be sent to an address in Florida, they scan it in and the inmate accesses it via the kiosk.”

The best part for the Sheriff’s department, it will also increase staff safety.

“Things are sent that could be ingested via your breathing or you know if it were to touch your skin so it will be much safer. If there’s contraband found in the envelope the company will notify us and we will take proper action at that time,” says Griffis.

After expanding the jail ECSO says they have been looking into ways to improve efficiency.

He says “the ladies won’t have to go through all of this mail which takes sometimes hours each day so we’re not gonna physically handle the mail unless it’s legal to mail the inmates will still receive the original paper legal mail.”

According to the Sheriff, the new tablet system won’t cost taxpayers more money.

“It’s 50 cents for each mail, or letter, a dollar for an image it will all be funded by the inmate or his/her commissary account. They have access to grievances, medical requests, law library, commissary.”
