As UTPB football prepares for the program’s fifth season, the Falcons will have to wait a bit longer than anticipated for their opening game in the fall.
On Tuesday, UTPB’s week one matchup with Wayland Baptist was canceled. The game was scheduled for Thursday, September 3rd at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.
Earlier this month, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) required its member institutions to reduce its football schedules to nine games and moving the start of its season to September 12th.
With that, Wayland Baptist – which competes within NAIA – was forced to withdraw from the matchup with UTPB.
The Falcons were also required to cut back their schedule. In May, the NCAA voted to reduce the maximum number of football games for Divison II schools from 11 to 10.
After Tuesday’s cancellation, UTPB’s schedule will require no further adjustments.
The Falcons will now start their season on September 12th at West Texas A&M. Their home opener will be on September 26th against Western New Mexico.
