The Bearkats enter the 2019 season with a chip on their shoulder and motivation to prove they can still make a deep playoff run this season.
Garden City is coming off a 13-1 overall record and state semifinal appearance in 2018. The Bearkats lost several seniors last year, and some leadership that came along with them.
“Everybody thinks that we’re not going to be very good because of the seniors that we lost, and I think we can prove them wrong,” said senior Hunter McMillan.
However, the Bearkats are out to prove last year’s playoff experience will pay off this upcoming season.
“The great thing about long playoff runs is all these guys, JV on down, get five extra weeks of practice where some people don’t. So that’s the good thing about a long playoff run is the extra football that everybody gets to play,” said head coach Jeff Jones.
Though the experience will help the young roster going into this year, there are still a few holes to fill before the season starts. Jones said he is still trying to find the team’s quarterback and fill in a few spots along the defensive line.
Garden City opens the 2019 season on August 30 against Sanderson.
