GARDEN CITY, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – Seven seniors return to the field for Garden City in 2020. They headline a group of Bearkats needing to replace each of the team’s starters from last season.
“We get to finally be the seniors that everybody looks up to,” said senior lineman Juan De Luna. “We get to push people around – not in the mean way but to make them work harder so that they know what it’s worth to be a Bearkat.”
GC will also rely heavily on a large class of sophomores. With the team’s lack of playing experiencing, the coaching staff has been emphasizing the simple things in practice.
“Just footwork with the linemen, proper paths for running backs, making sure they’re tucking the ball,” said head coach Jeff Jones. “It’s very back to basics for us this year.”
As a credit to the program’s pedigree, Garden City enters this fall as the #13 team in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s preseason rankings for Class 1A, Division I.
Given all the talent the Bearkats will be tasked with replacing, they know some observers will be skeptical of the team.
“A lot of people are saying we might not be as good because we have a lot of younger players on this team,” said senior lineman John Allen. “We’re going to work just as hard if not harder than any other team. That’s just what we bring to the table. We’re going as hard as we can – anytime, anywhere.”
“The cool thing about these kids is they’re still going to have GC on their helmet and that carries a lot with them,” said Jones. “I think they have a little chip on their shoulder. They know people are going to look past them this year, so I think they’re ready to try to prove some people wrong.”
