Warbirds announce Tate Smith as new head coach

ODESSA, Tx (ABC Big 2/Fox 24) – The West Texas Warbirds, an indoor football team, have hired Odessa-native Tate Smith as its next head coach.

Smith has been coaching football since 2011 when he began coaching quarterbacks at Odessa High. Smith continued his high school coaching career at Greenwood as special teams coordinator in 2013. He also coached at Edinburgh and Ballinger high schools.

In 2015, he was the assistant to the head coach and offensive coordinator of the Rio Grande Valley Sol team, a former X-League member. Smith then returned to high school athletics as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Odessa High in 2017.

Smith played quarterback and earned his degree at the University of Texas El Paso.
