UTPB basketball teams drop weekend series against ranked West Texas A&M teams

ODESSA, Tx (ABC Big 2/Fox 24) – Both UTPB men and women basketball teams dropped two games to ranked West Texas A&M opponents last weekend.

Head men’s basketball coach Josh Newman said his team struggled with turnovers and gave up too many transition baskets to the Buffs. However, he also mentioned that numbers were not on his team’s side.

“We’re never going to make excuses, but I think there are some reasons my basketball team has struggled a little bit. We got some bad news that Dadou Traore was going to be out the rest of the year as well as Israel Barnes so those were two men we’d anticipated joining us sometime this season. And then unfortunately for us, Jordan Horn had to take a leave of absence for a week. So it was just kind of bad timing,” Newman said.

Women’s head coach Rae Boothe had praised her team’s preparation and effort the week before, and was still proud of the way her team performed this weekend despite the losses. She said their main area of growth needed to be focus when things aren’t necessarily going their way.

Both sets of Falcons are back in action this Thursday against St. Edwards.
