Two-A-Days: McCamey Badgers

Local Sports

The McCamey Badgers went from the underdogs to the champions after winning District 2-2A last season.

Now the Badgers are adjusting to a new head coach and a young roster going into this year.

Former defensive coordinator Michael Woodard was promoted to head coach this season after former head coach Fred Staugh left the program for Monahans.

It’s Woodard’s first head coaching position and he said he is thrilled to have the opportunity. While it has been a transition, he said he is not changing many things in terms of style of play since he was still on last year’s coaching staff.

“I would say that 90 to 95 percent of what we’re going to do is the exact same as what we’ve done before,” he said.

Though the team may already be familiar with the coach and playbook, the Badgers are adjusting to a younger roster this season.

“As a coach, you’d like to be a veteran team. But we’re not. We’re a young team. But some of those players have experience and they’re energetic and they’re leading already,” Woodard said.
