Sul Ross Softball’s hot start cut short by COVID-19

The Sul Ross softball team was off to its best start in program history this season.

The Lobos season came to an end, however, after the American Southwest Conference canceled the remainder of the season in response to the coronavirus. Sul Ross had started the season with a 13-5 record.

“We were sad. My kids were really excited about the season and about how we were going and how we started the season. So we were on the right track but then we kind of get this curveball thrown at us, but we understand,” head coach Troy Canaba said.

Canaba said the NCAA and the conference made the right decision to cancel the season to limit the spread of the virus. He said the student-athletes’ health is the most important thing.

Coach and his team are already looking at the positive. The Sul Ross team expects nearly every athlete to return next season. Just one senior is listed on the roster.

“The biggest thing now is just kind of prepare and hopefully everybody does what they’re supposed to do and we get this thing back on the right track,” he said.
