Local golfers shine in round one of West Texas Amateur

Day one of the West Texas Amateur Golf Tournament kicked off Friday morning at the Midland Country Club.

It’s the 91st anniversary of the tournament, and the first time the tournament has been played at the country club.

Several of the participants have ties to the area, and a few are at the top of the leaderboard after day one.

Former Andrews and Midland College golfer Casey Fowler is one of the players from the area toward the top of the leaderboard after day one. He’s tied for fourth after shooting even par in the first round. Former Odessa College golfer Tripp Wallace is also tied for fourth.

Midland-native Lane Branum is tied for ninth, along with former UTPB golfer Austin Anderson. Both shot +1 the first day.

For a complete list of the leaderboard, visit the Texas Golf Association’s website.

The tournament continues tomorrow and Sunday, with the field being cut to the low 72 prior to the final day.
