Big 12 officials coordinator Greg Burks attempted to clarify what would result in a penalty regarding the “horns down” symbol during football games.
“Horns down” of course, mocks the University of Texas’ signature “horns up” symbol.
So what determines whether the mock is penalized? Basically, it depends.
Burks said officials should use their own judgement on penalizing the symbol, as with all unsportsmanlike conduct calls. For example, “horns down” directed at a player or coach would probably result in a penalty. Brief use of the symbol not pointed in anyone’s direction probably would not.
