A waiter at Saltgrass Steak House  in Odessa, is staying positive after experiencing racism on the job.
Khalil Cavil was waiting a table Saturday night, when the guests he had been serving denied him gratuity.

“My heart just dropped, I didn’t know what to says or what to think in the moment but there’s hurt there,” Khalil said.

On the bill his customers left behind on the table, there is a large zero with a line scratched through it in the area meant for leaving a tip amount. At the top of the receipt, someone had written, “We don’t tip terrorist.”

Khalil says people have made assumptions about his name before, but he doesn’t have any Middle Eastern roots. So the people making assumptions based on his name, assumed wrong.

“My dad was in the military and a buddy that he was very close to, served with him…Khalil was killed in an accident and so my dad just named me after him, one of his best friends,” he went on to say.

Khalil shared a photo of the receipt to Facebook Saturday night, and since then it has received more that 1,500 likes and more than 1,000 shares. The waiter says he shared the image because he wants tor remind people that racism and hatred still exists.

“It was not about the money. It was never about the money, it’s about shedding the light on an issue I feel very passionate about, ” Khalil said.

Even though he acknowledges the racially charged note, he says his faith in Jesus Christ is encouraging him to move forward despite his negative experience.

“I just had to think…what would Jesus do in this situation,” he said.

After catching wind of the incident many restaurant goers and others who were touched by the post, have been sending Khalil tips of their own. Facebook users even found an app where they could send money to Khalil directly and contribute to the tip he was denied Saturday.

A statement released by Terry Turney, Chief Operating Officer of Saltgrass, reads: “We stand by and support our employee. Racism of any form is unacceptable and we have banned this customer from returning to our establishment.”
