Both UTPB basketball teams will play at home this weekend for the first time this season.
The men and women’s teams host Western New Mexico University on Saturday, Dec. 8.
The match-up marks the men’s first conference basketball game. The Falcons will face a 3-1 and much-improved WNMU team.
Men’s Basketball Head Coach Josh Newman said winning this first conference match-up is crucial to UTPB’s success this season.
“To win championships, you have to win every home game. That’s a fact. And then you’ve got to figure out how to steal games on the road,” he said.
The women’s basketball team already has one conference game under its belt. The Falcons fell to Texas Woman’s this past weekend, 45-41. Two UTPB players did not play because of injuries, according to head women’s basketball coach Rae Boothe.
Despite the outcome, Boothe said the game gave the team a confidence boost.
“It was nice to know that we could compete with a really good team despite only have you know, our top six,” she said.
Boothe said the team is excited to finally have a game at home.
This weekend’s match-ups tip-off at 2 p .m. with the women’s basketball game, followed by the men’s at 4 p.m.
