UTPB Basketball Excited For Conference Games At Home

Both the UTPB Men and Women basketball teams will play two Lone Star Conference games at home this week.

The teams will host Angelo State on Thursday and Texas A&M – Kingsville on Saturday.

The UTPB men’s team is 3-2 in conference play so far this season. Head Coach Josh Newman said he had hoped for a better record at this point in the year.

He said one of the things the Falcons need to work on throughout the rest of conference play is cleaning up the offense. UTPB currently leads the conference in scoring, averaging 89 points a game. But that high scoring isn’t necessarily translating to wins.

“We’re still turning the ball over at a high rate. We’ve got to execute when it really comes down to crunch time. As the game goes on, we’re really good in transition but there are times you have to execute a play, and we’ve got to get better at that,” Newman said.

Meanwhile, the UTPB women’s team is still searching for that first Lone Star Conference victory. The Falcons are 0-5 in conference play this season. Head Coach Rae Boothe said it is crucial that UTPB gets a win this week at home.

“We really need to split every week the rest of the way to have an opportunity to play to be playing for something,” she said.

The team has come close to victories in five out of six of the games, and Boothe said finishing games is the team’s biggest issue.
