Texas high school hires Art Briles as head football coach

Mount Vernon ISD has hired former Baylor coach Art Briles as its next head football coach.

Briles was let go from the Baylor program following a sexual assault scandal at the school. An external investigation in 2016 showed Baylor had been mishandling sexual assault allegations, including some against football players.

This will be Briles’ first job in the United States since he was let go. He was most recently coaching a team in Italy.

“After a thorough due diligence process and several earnest conversations, we believe our students will benefit greatly from his skills and experience,” Mount Vernon superintendent Jason McCullough said in a press release.

Mount Vernon is a 3A school in East Texas.
