Tennessee Tech Steals Game One from Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Tennessee Tech used a three-run fifth inning and a stellar performance from Ethan Roberts out of the bullpen to win game one of the Austin super regional, 5-4.

Texas is now one game away from its season coming to an end. The Longhorns need to win game two on Sunday at 2:00 to keep their season alive and force a winner-take-all game three on Monday.

Down, 3-2, in the fifth, Chase Chambers hit a two-run double off the wall in center field to put the Golden Eagles up, 4-2. Two batters later, David Garza added an insurance run on a double down the right field line.

Texas got a run back in the seventh on a David Hamilton sac fly to left that scored Jake McKenzie, but that was all Roberts gave up in four innings of relief. The Tennessee Tech reliever threw four innings giving up just one run on one hit while walking four and striking out four.

Marcus Evey got the start and lasted five innings. He gave up three runs, just two earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out three.

Kody Clemens continued his postseason heroics with a solo home run to right in the third inning to put Texas ahead, 3-2. It was the All-American’s 22nd homer of the season. Clemens had a busy week leading to today’s game as he was drafted by the Tigers with the first pick in the third round and named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy.

Nolan Kingham got the start for the Longhorns, but only lasted 4.2 innings. After a stellar performance while sick against Texas A&M in the regionals last weekend, he struggled on Saturday, giving giving up five earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He also struck out five.

Texas first got on the board in the first on a Zach Zubia sac fly that scored Duke Ellis.

Tennessee Tech took the lead with a two-run third inning on a Brennon Kaleiwahea bases loaded single. The Longhorns answered in the bottom half of the inning on an Ellis sac fly, and then they took the lead on Clemens’ home run.
