MIDLAND, Texas (Big 2 / Fox 24) – Students at Lee Freshman High School endured a scary moment on Monday, after another student was reported to have a gun on campus. According to Midland ISD, students reported to school administration that another student had brought a gun onto campus. MISD Police arrested and removed the student from the school without putting the campus into lock down.
Midland Crime Stoppers also received a tip about this incident. Angie Valenzuela , Director for Midland Crime Stoppers, said they have seen incidents like this before and hope this will encourage more students to come forward in the future.
“We have be able to recover guns in past school years,” Valenzuela said. “We hate for that happening with guns on campus, but we like it when the kids get involved and empower them to take care of their schools.”
Midland Crime Stoppers are implemented in all secondary campus across, where anyone can report crime. The organization is encouraging all students within their school program to call into the hot line at 432-694-TIPS (8477) to report any suspicious activity. Students who report any crime on campus will remain completely anonymous.
But Valenzuela said incidents involving a gun should be reported by students on campus.
“In cases like today where there was a gun seen, we encourage them contact somebody on campus immediately,” Valenzuela said. “From there, those school officials, the principle will contact school police.”
And after this incident, Midland Crime Stoppers hope all students at Lee Freshman High School and Midland ISD learned a valuable lesson, to take care of each other.
“It’s up to the kids, the students to take care of their campuses, to take care of their friends,” Valenzuela said. “We all want as safe school environment.”
