Permian comes off week one win, prepares for a battle in the Metroplex

Permian heads East after taking care of Abilene Cooper in Week 1

ODESSA, Texas (Nexstar) – After a strong performance by the Panther defense in week one against Abilene Cooper, Permian has set its sights on the east side of Dallas. More specifically, Mesquite.

The Panthers are set to take on the Mesquite Horn Jaguars on Friday night. The Jags are coming off a seven-point road win against Pearce (Richardson, TX) last week.

Permian Head Coach Jeff Ellison says he saw a lot of things to like last week. He believes the defense regrouped well after giving up 14 points to start the game.

This week’s game against Horn was not on the schedule to start the year. After cancelations around the state, the two teams only showed up on each other’s schedules last week.

Coach Ellison is excited about the match-up. He says, while Permian doesn’t play Mesquite often, they do face teams from the Metroplex regularly and they love the challenge.

Permian was not the only team affected by COVID-19 in the last few weeks. The Odessa High Bronchos had their week one game canceled after a player tested positive late Thursday night.

Coach Ellison took some time to address what his team is doing in the face of the pandemic.

Coach Ellison says the biggest way for the team to continue to improve is to get on the field. He says the only way to get better at football is to play football, especially in a season as turbulent as the 2020 campaign.

The Panthers will take on Jags at 7 p.m. Friday in Mesquite.
