ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – Thursday was the last day of Odessa College’s homecoming week. Students piled into the Sports Center Thursday night for one last hoo-rah.
For 2020, they were the Wranglers of the roaring ’20s. They had their classic crowning at the basketball game.
“We get to announce our homecoming king and queen for homecoming 2020,” Student Life Executive Director Urisonya Flunder says. “and so that’s a big deal for our students. We have 4 queen contestants and 4 king contestants.”
Something that was different though, in that they didn’t have their homecoming with football in the fall.
“Since we’re a community college that doesn’t have a football team,” Flunder says. “Our basketball team plays mainly during the spring semester, that’s why we have our homecoming during the spring.”
With their homecoming, they had loads of food and brought more students together.
One way was with a VIP section. To get in, a student had to be in the top 20 point earners in Drive to Success.
The incentive program has the students gain points throughout the year through academic success. They get a better chance to win monthly prizes and the grand prize of a Mustang.
“It’s really just an incentive to like incentivize that they’re here, they’re students,” Flunder says. “Whether they’re online or face to face students, no matter what. As long as they have 6 hours they’re enrolled in the program. And it’s to say thank you for the things you’re doing, and also encourage them to do more.”
