ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox24) – The City of Odessa will be continuing their free COVID-19 testing to residents this Tuesday and Thursday, but from now on the testing events will operating differently.
With 47 people testing positive out of the 197 test that were administered at Sherwood Park earlier this month, the city of Odessa will now be operating the rest of their free COVID-19 testing as drive thru events. City officials want to assure everyone who is involved in these testing events stay as safe as possible.
“We thought it would just make more sense just to having people staying in their vehicles,” City of Odessa Communications Director, Devin Sanchez said. “As much as we tried to enforce
the social distancing, it is mandatory that everyone wear a mask at this testing events. But you’re dealing with people.”
Sanchez said the city has been seeing a large number of families asking for tests. There will not be a limit on how many tests one car can get, but only the first 200 people will be able to get tested.
“We don’t have anything set in stone,” Sanchez said. ” We’re just kind of providing this service when we go through this experince and we learn ways to make it better for the next event.”
The city is urging the public to be midful of other residents who may really need to get tested.
“There are people in our community that this is an absolute need,” Sanchez said. “They don’t have insurance, or they can’t afford it , or they can’t wait to in line at one of the urgent care for an entire day to get a test, unfortunatly they are essential employees they cannot work from home.”
But the city is pleased that they have been able to achieve their goal in providing tests to all parts of the community, and they hope to continue doing that.
” We want to be able to provide that service to them,” Sanchez said. “If they can’t come to this one on Tuesday, they can come on Thursday and hopefully offer them a little bit of peace of mind.”
The first drive thru testing event this week will be at Salinas Park on Tuesday July 14th from 9 A.M to 11 A.M. The next event will be held on Thursday July 16th at UTPB Park. The parking lots will open at 7 A.M, and city officials are asking the public not to line up before then.
The City of Odessa is also asking residents to provide two working phone numbers and an email address to notify you of your test results.
