New Company Coming to Big Spring

A new business may be making it’s way to Big Spring. Zummit is a Mexico-based company that produces shrink wrap. City leaders hope the new business will fill the employment gap left by the closing of Western Container back in October.

“It was probably out biggest employer at one point,” says Mayor Larry McLellan.

McLellan says a couple hundred jobs were lost with the closing of Western Container, and this business couldn’t come at a better time.

“That’s what we need here. we need jobs and jobs that are diversified. It’s just an economic boost when you can get more jobs in a community,” says McLellan.

The city council vote to bring Zummit to Big Spring was unanimous. Starting at about 30 jobs and hopefully growing to around 80 jobs.

“I think this is good for Big Spring,” says McLellan.

The mayor says he has heard positive feedback from Big Spring residents and says the director of Zummit is eager to get started as well.

“He was very excited to be able to come into Big Spring and they love the facility we have, the Western Container building,” says McLellan.

McLellan hopes that this company will grow and continue to  provide more jobs in the community.
