MISD prepares for Legacy High School

MIDLAND, Texas (Nexstar)- The current school year at Lee High School is still underway, but Midland ISD is paving the way for the school to open as Legacy High School in the fall.

A re-imagined Legacy High’s mascot will be a Revolutionary War-era Rebel and the school’s colors will remain maroon and white.

In January, students were given the opportunity to submit drawings of their proposed mascot image.

The Citizens Renaming Committee has narrowed those submissions down to two. Now, the final mascot submissions are being re-created digitally and students will vote in May to decide their favorite mascot depiction from the two selected.

Work is also underway to refresh everything from floors and walls to logos and uniforms before school resumes in August.

The controversy surrounding this name change is still very much alive. ABC Big 2 News spoke with students and parents who still have mixed reactions.

For students like Chad Whicksmith, he wishes his school’s name would stay the same.

“I’ve gone here for 4 years you know and like grew up being a Lee Rebel,” Whicksmith said. “They talk about like the name and the history but none of us see it as that ,when somebody asks what school you go to you say I go to Lee High not Robert E. Lee High.”

Some students said they are supporting a new beginning.

” I think that it happening can be a change, but it should have been done sooner than later because what’s done is done,” said Isaiah Walls.

But many students and parents aren’t happy that a long tradition will be gone.

” My daughter is upset about not being able to graduate from the same school that her father did so this just isn’t right,” said Amber Masters.

But even though Lee high school will change it’s name to Legacy high school, students are glad some things will stay the same.

” The colors will be the same as the Lee colors and it’s always going to be the same as the Legacy colors and that’s what is going to matter the most,,” said Alexis Guvara. ” We’re all Lee family and we’re always going to be Lee.”
