New Texas Laws

ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/ Fox 24) – Some new laws will ring in 2020 across our state. We have a look at the changes in the new year.

Senate Bill 1264 protects patients with state-regulated health plans from getting surprise medical bills and leaves billing negotiations between insurance plans and providers.

House Bill 492 allows temporary tax exemptions for areas designated as government-declared disaster areas. Texas voters were required to amend the state constitution in order to pass. Voters approved that in november.

Senate Bill 212 will put new requirements on employees of colleges and universities to report assault, sexual harassment, dating violence and stalking. Failure to report the incidents may result in a criminal offense or steep penalties.

House Bill 4390 requires business owners to disclose when data with sensitive personal information may have been breached or hacked. It sets a deadline of 60 days to report that breach.

Here’s another one, the prize fees for bingo are changing, thanks to House Bill 914. If a person wins at least $5 in cash, they must pay a fee of 5% of the prize amount.
