MIDLAND, Texas (ABC Big 2 / FOX 24) – A Midland woman was getting ready to do some garden work when she had a scary surprise waiting in her shoe.
Cassandra Oeth and her family were having a normal Saturday when Cassandra found a baby rattlesnake in her shoe.
“I picked up my muddy work tennis shoes, one in each hand, walked out about 10 feet over to the planter, shook them four or five times, threw them down to the pavement and that’s when I saw the snake,” Cassandra said.
Cassandra managed to captured a picture of the small rattlesnake once her husband Larry got it out of her shoe.
“Getting the snake out of the shoe was the hard part, so I did the only thing I could, Larry said. “I whacked it a few times and it was stunned so I could get the shoe and shake it out on the ground.”
Larry managed to later kill it, but Oeth said finding a rattlesnake inside their home has left them very concerned.
“It was the question of how many more of them are in our garage and we need to get rid everything that is obstructing the floor,” Cassandra said.
The Oeths have two young kids and want to make sure they are safe.
“We’re going to talk to our five-year-old boy about it quite a bit and keep an eye on him,” Larry said. “And our one-year-old…we’re going to have to watch like a hawk for the next couple of years.”
But this close encounter reminded this Midland mom to look closely at items before reaching into a place she can’t see.
“I’m extremely grateful I got to learn that lesson and re-learned what I should have known and it wasn’t my children,” Cassandra said. ” I’m glad that that’s the way it worked out.”
