Local shelter is breaking the cycle of family violence

News

MIDLAND, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – Safe Place of the Permian Basin has been helping break the cycle of family violence since 1978 and covering 15 counties across the Basin, more than 1,000 clients and children come through their doors each year.

“People would be surprised at the variety of situations we find walking through our doors, whether it’s an elderly person whose a victim of violence from their children, which does happen. Even people who have moved to the Permian Basin recently because of the oil boom but still have no family here, if they are in a violent situation and they have no family to turn back to especially when they have children,” said Lee Anna Good Development Director, Safe Place of the Permian Basin.

With the help of the United Way of Midland’s innovative grant program, more family violence victims have a chance at a new life.

The grant program offered $5,000 worth of mattresses and supplied the shelter with a commercial refrigerator. Good said, the shelter is in constant need of mattresses.

For families that sleep on them, mattresses are more than just a place to sleep but a safe haven.
