WINKLER COUNTY, Texas (Nexstar) – The project to building an overpass in Winkler County is officially on the books.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, work will begin on the overpass Jan. 19. The overpass will be built on Highway 302 over Highway 115 and the railroad just west of Kermit.
“This intersection is a critical location for energy development,” Odessa District Engineer John Speed said in a statement. “Traffic counts in the area have more than doubled since 2015, and the current four-way stop condition is no longer viable. The project will dramatically reduce the risk of vehicle crashes. It will also decrease the current delays experienced while moving personnel, equipment and sand proppants between the Delaware Basin and centers of mining and other resources to the east.”
The nearly $55 million project was partially funded by a $25 million federal grant through the BUILD program. The rest was from the Texas Transportation Commission and The Permian Basin Road Safety Coalition.
The project is scheduled to take about two years to complete.
