ODESSA, Texas (BIG 2/ FOX 24)- A program at UTPB is making a difference for educators and their students.
“In our area there are a large number of our students we serve in k-12 education who are second language learners many of whom are still learning the language and their families are often learning the languages with them,’ says the Dean of the College of Education Larry Daniel.
Adding that it’s their unique teaching methods that helped them rank in the top 50 in their Master’s in English Language Learning Degrees by intelligent.com.
He says “most students are learning languages more organically, they are thrust into a culture where that language is spoken and there’s a necessity to begin learning the language. Helping our educators understand how that process works is extremely important.”
Associate Professor Yolanda Salgado says “it was just an amazing feeling to know that somebody outside the university’s watching and has recognized the goodness of our program, the quality of our program.”
She says classes like educational psychology, cultural diversity, and second language acquisitions set this program apart from others.
“It helps out students really understand the process of learning and the process of the developmental brain and how language develops and how a second language is learned.”
The program is offered online and can be completed in a year; another big reason UTPB was recognized.
“Working with the busy student, we don’t expect our students to resign from their jobs and then to show up here for a period of time while they’re working on their Master’s Degree,” says the Dean of the College of Education.
