The city of Odessa names October Code Enforcement Month

ODESSA, Texas (BIG 2/ FOX 24)- “It takes a village of us to make Odessa beautiful and to keep it beautiful,” says Code Enforcement Education Administrator Darlene Mays.

It’s official the City of Odessa is naming the month of October Code Enforcement Month.

“It’s every day and if we just chip at it one bite at a time if we do it every day and we can make a better, cleaner, safer, neighborhood in which we live. We want everyone to take pride in their neighboorhood,” says Mays.

She adds that the first step towards a clean city is a good mindset.

“A transformation of attitudes of changing the way we think, the way we do business as usual. People want us to come and issue them a notice of violation and that’s when they want to go in a clean up their properties but we want to do a change of mindset where they would do it every day.”

As for a frequent violation, however, she says they have a list. “Common code list of violations that we see every day as we go to the field or citizens calling in reporting those violations. It could be anything from litter, from weeds, mostly illegal dumping and high weeds.”

According to Mays with a change of mind comes some extra change in your pocket. “Give them like seven days to clean it up if they don’t clean it up then we’re gonna, we can either issue a citation, we can do a probable cause where they are a summons to court to clean it up they could be issued a citation.”

Code Enforcement will be hosting a block party on Saturday, October 12, 2019.
