Teenager killed in Midland venue hall shooting, suspect at-large

MIDLAND, Texas (Nexstar) – A night of music at a Midland venue hall turned into a tragedy, after a teenager was shot and killed.

Midland Police say just around 10 P.M. on Saturday, they got the call that someone had been shot at Kessler’s Hall, a property off the 3200 block of W. Wall Street.

Police say 19-year-old Samuel Anaya III was shot several times. He was taken to the hospital where approximately 45 minutes later, he was pronounced dead.

Midland Police say the shooter was positively identified as 17-year-old Greg Anthony Barrera III. Police say a warrant was issued for his arrest. The suspect is still at-large.

The owner of Kessler’s Hall told us off-camera, there was an event the night of the shooting that involved a showcase of rap music and artists. The owner says at some point Saturday night, the victim was standing by the hall’s entrance sign, when he was shot. The owner says the victim then ran back to a set of doors leading inside Kessler’s Hall, where he collapsed against it.

The owner says Kessler’s Hall is primarily a wedding venue. When events are held, the owner says off-duty officers are present. But on Saturday night, the organizer of the rap showcase hired their own security. The event was considered “BYOB,” which stands for “bring your own beverage (booze/bottle).”

Right now, a motive isn’t known.

One friend replied to our reporter Rob Tooke’s Facebook message, saying the victim Samuel, who went by “Sammy”, cared about everyone he met, and that he was always making sure others were happy.

If you have any information on the shooting, you can give Midland Crime Stoppers or Midland Police a call.
