ODESSA, TX (Big 2/ Fox 24) – Cyber Monday has become one of the top shopping days of the year.

According to the better business bureau, in 2018, consumers spent a record-breaking $7.9 million on online purchases alone.

Those irresistible deals you may see online may tempt you to hit “checkout.”

But you want to be very careful about those misleading advertisements and lookalike websites.

But no worries, the better business bureau is giving you some tips to follow before clicking your way to checkout.

The bureau says you must keep a close eye on the web address in your browser.

Scammers would create lookalike websites, but make sure the sites use the correct spelling of a business name and have legitimate contact information and customer service numbers.

Be aware of the secure web addresses it should begin with HTTPS:// not HTTP://

Also, watch out for those texts and emails that claim you have a free prize or even alerting you to click a link.

The better business bureau says those are phishing scams. The bureau also advises you to update your antivirus software on your devices.

It’ll be the best way to protect you from those phishing scams.
