MIDLAND, Texas (BIG 2/ FOX 24)- Sometimes all anyone needs is a second chance. “Have a good time but we are really excited to bring in some of the new folks who maybe haven’t been before,” says Hannah Horick with Permian Basin LGBTQ Plus.
A second chance to experience their prom night but this time doing it their way.
“We’ve just really had a lot of positive feedback, especially the members of our organization love this event and they ask for it every year. We’re here to give everybody a chance to go to prom because not all of our members have felt comfortable in their own skin when they were in high school or maybe their school wasn’t as welcoming to folks who were going to prom with their partner of choice.”
According to Horick West Texas has come a long way she says “West Texas has grown into being more welcoming for everybody regardless of what their background is and some of it I’m sure comes with all the new folks that move into the area and they are bringing perspectives with them from all over the country.”
She hopes this event will only grow bigger in the upcoming years. “I would love to see this event grow and be bigger in the community. We sold so many tickets and then had so many people at Basin Pride yesterday our best estimate is about 850 people and that’s on the low end.”
Permian Basin LGBTQ Plus hopes reoccurring events like these will help bridge the gap and welcome anyone to join their organization.
“More people in the business community in Odessa, more people in other communities who maybe haven’t spent time with queer folks in Odessa can feel comfortable and welcomed and they can jump in with us.”
