PENWELL, Texas (BIG2/FOX24) – The Penwell Knights Raceway at Caprock Motorplex is calling all racers!
They are back in business after the facility closed its doors last October due to a lightening strike burning down its main building. The control tower, as well as all the equipment inside, were a total loss.
“It was very disappointing,” said Art Henderson. “But we had faith that they would get it back up and going.”
Henderson is a traveling racer who comes to the Penwell Knights Raceway at Caprock Motorplex every year. His annual go-to event is the “Dirty South No Prep Series.”
“It’s a small hometown type track. That’s where we all started our roots. It’s a local track, and to come and be a part of a local track is always nice.”
Due to the fire back in October, the track has been out of business for 9 months. But thanks to the outpour of community support, as well as the dedication of the owners, it is now reconstructed and better than ever. In fact, there is a news building adjacent to the main building, which Gary Gardenhire says took them only three months to build.
“We reopened about three weeks ago – had a great reopening. We put our first major event of the year on this weekend with the ‘Dirty South No Prep.’ It sold out,” said Gardenhire of Penwell Knights Raceway at Caprock Motorplex.
But most importantly, Gardenhire says he is back on track with his mission.
“My main focus is the kids on the street. Getting them off the street and back on the racetrack.”
