MIDLAND, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – In another surprising turn of events, the Midland ISD Bond has passed, according to officials with “We Choose Our Future” the political action committee in support of the bond.
It proved to be a long process as the recount got underway around 8 a.m. Friday morning and didn’t conclude until about 4 a.m. Saturday morning, the PAC says.
The final tally; 11,411 for and 11,400 against. The bond prevailed.
Getting to Saturday morning though, has been a difficult and confusing road in and of itself. Initially, on election day, it was reported that the bond had passed by a narrow margin. However, this was an unofficial count and more ballots still needed to be counted.
About a week later, when all of the ballots had come in, the Midland County Elections Office posted the “cumulative” final results. The “cumulative” results again showed the bond had passed by 18 votes.
Just a few minutes later, officials with the MISD Board of Trustees told Big 2/Fox 24 that the bond had not passed and the elections office had not included mail-in ballots in their “cumulative” total.
Once the additional mail-in ballots were counted, the bond had failed.
The confusion and narrow margin then prompted “We Choose Our Future” to call for the recount.
“We Choose Our Future, SPAC has elected to file for a recount on the Midland ISD School Bond election. It is standard practice to request a recount for any election with so few ballots determining the outcome. In several states, this 25 votes difference (0.1% of all votes cast) would have triggered an automatic recount. We owe it to the voters, and our supporters, to ensure an accurate vote count. We look forward to a transparent and open process.”Christine Foreman, Dave Joyner – Co-Chairs of We Choose Our Future
In a process that included about 50 people, with representation from both sides, the recount began and has now finished.
The result, a passing grade for the MISD Bond.
