ODESSA, Texas (ABC Big 2 / FOX 24) – Odessa Regional Medical Center honored one local EMS worker with the 2021 EMS Service Provider of the Year Award.
Andrew McElroy said being a firefighter runs in his family which inspired his career as a paramedic for Odessa Fire Rescue. McElroy said he has always had a passion for helping people.
“It means a whole lot to us especially when we get to see a good out come because a lot of times we don’t get to see a good out come,” McElroy said.
ORMC nominated McElroy for this year’s award. The hospital wants all EMS staff to feel this honor. For McElroy, getting any type appreciation is heartwarming.
“We do our job with such passion with such love that when someone awards us for it’s such an honor because we never really get that,” McElroy said.
“They’re unsung heroes quite frankly, they not only put their lives on the line but the live of their family’s much like all the health care workers did,” said Stacy Brown, President of ORMC. “We feel like it’s our responsibility to step up first and bring our community together to just signal out how important they are to all of us.”
And fellow EMS workers at OFR think McElroy is the right person for this award.
“We couldn’t be prouder for Mr. McElroy it’s well deserved and it’s great to see him representing us,” said Daniel Chavez, EMS Training Captain for OFR.
“From the bottom of my heart thank you for this,” McElroy said. “This is not the stopping point ,this is the beginning point for not just me but for every single one of us out there.”
