ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – The OPD Traffic Unit has charged Ranjit Singh in a fatal crash that happened on I-20 back on March 19th.
Singh has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to OPD, Singh had been driving for over 16 hours without proper rest. This is a violation of the Federal Hours of Service Regulation.
The United States Marshals Service located Singh in California and arrested him on the warrants.
The investigation is ongoing.
THE ORIGINAL RELEASE FROM THE DAY OF THE CRASH:
On March 19, 2020 at approximately 1608 hours, Odessa Police and Odessa Fire Rescue responded to IH-20 and Grant in reference to a major crash involving an 18-wheeler.
Investigation revealed that a black Dodge truck, being operated by Ricky Enriquez, 26 years of age, of Odessa, was stopped facing westbound on IH-20 for construction ahead.
A white Jaguar, being operated by Manuel Rodriguez, 40 years of age, of Decatur, Texas, was traveling westbound on IH-20, directly behind the Dodge truck. The passenger of the Jaguar was later identified as Amber Sahagun, 39 years of age, of Decatur, Texas.
An 18-wheeler, being operated by Ranjit Singh, 42 years of age, of New York, was traveling westbound on IH-20, directly behind the Jaguar. Investigation revealed that Singh failed to control speed and struck the back of the Jaguar, causing the Jaguar to strike the back of the Dodge truck.
Amber Sahagun was pronounced deceased on scene and next of kin have been notified. Manuel Rodriguez was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. There were no reports of any other injuries. The investigation continues.
