BIG SPRING, Texas (Nexstar) – Big Spring Police are investigating after a man was found in a vehicle with a gunshot wound.
Police say around 9:10 p.m. Monday night, officers were called to the area of 18th Street and Austin about the gunshot victim.
At the scene, officers found 29-year-old Casey Brackett in the driver’s seat stopped on the side of the road with a gunshot wound, according to a release.
Brackett was later transferred to Scenic Mountain Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel, police say.
One man who lives along East 18th St. in Big Spring spoke only with ABC Big and FOX 24 after finding the victim in his front yard.
“Around 9 o’clock my sister comes in my room telling me she hears gunshots and there’s someone shooting outside,” said Cory Bustamante.
After hearing those gunshots on Monday Night, Bustamante found a car parked outside his house and tried to talk to the man inside.
“I said, ‘ hey man what are you doing out here? there was no response,” Bustamante said. “As I walked closer, I realized that he had been shot.”
Bustamante said he can’t believe something like this happened in his neighborhood which is right next to Goliad Elementary School. It’s where he’s called home for almost three years.
“I have never seen anything like this happen especially next to this school that’s why we moved here because I figured it would be a nice neighborhood and there wouldn’t be any problems here,” Bustamante said.
The gunman is still on the run, Bustamante is hoping they’re caught soon.
“I hope that the family finds justice and I hope they find who did this.”
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Big Spring Police Department or the Howard County Crime Stoppers at 432-263-TIPS.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
