ODESSA, Tx (Big 2/Fox 24) – There’s a discussion going around about the idea of putting funds for workforce housing.
Odessa Housing Finance Corporation met with Delphi Affordable Housing Group to set a plan in place for workers to live in affordable housing here in Ector County.
Jill Miller, executive director of Odessa Housing Finance Corporation says since Ector County has a high cost of living, the area needs to have affordable housing for workers.
“We’re just trying to provide housing for people that is a cost for everybody,” she says. “No matter what your income is.”
Miller says the high cost of living in Ector County increases many job shortages in the area.
“Not that many people have a place to live or not want to move here,” Miller says. “We have a teacher shortage, we have a police officer shortage and firefighter shortage.”
Sheriff Mike Griffis says we have the biggest increase rent in the United States and it’s a hard place to live and afford. He also says having this plan in place would greatly benefit those job positions that aren’t filled.
“If there was more housing available that would absolutely help out recruitment,” he says. “And helps us get our positions filed that we have opened right now.”
Miller says she’s always trying to find ways to have affordable housing for all in the area.
“We do our best to always try and find the tools that we can develop affordable housing for everybody.”
