ODESSA, Texas (BIG2/FOX24) – It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the Basin. Downtown Odessa kicked off its month-long holiday celebration, on Tuesday, with an opening ceremony for the temporary ice skating rink.
“It’s awesome, it’s awesome. You can feel the Christmas in the air,” said one resident.
Father, Ruben Mancha, was born and raised in Odessa. He says it is nice to see his city grow, just in time for his young children.
“We got Christmas music, and you know, we got everybody with smiles on and having a good time. So good spirit, good spirit,” said Mancha.
Whether you are an experienced skater or a rookie, there was enough Christmas spirit to go around. Tuesday night’s ceremony kicked off Winterfest – a series of holiday festivities hosted by Downtown Odessa Inc.
“You know, they don’t necessarily know what to do and then all of a sudden they get it, and they’re just having fun and skating around,” said Event Coordinator, Alexa Moulakis. “It’s just been really great to see people enjoying themselves and familes together.”
From the Christmas parade to the first-ever New Year’s countdown, Moulakis says she hopes their efforts will bring people, and their business, downtown.
“People don’t necessarily need to come and pay $10 to skate. They can go pay $10 at a downtown business, show us the receipt, and use that to come skate.”
