ODESSA, TX (Big 2/ Fox 24) – We’re in lent season, and the Odessa Ministerial Alliance will have on what they call a Lent lunch series lending up to Easter. Now, this lunch series is to help raise money to help those in need.
For 30 plus years, this ministry has been doing everything that they can to help families who are in need by raising money during this time of the year.
Many community members are donating money, meanwhile enjoying a nice meal in return at the Mackey Chapel Methodist Church to help with the church’s mission to help those in need.
“My heart is with mobilizing people that are marginalized and stuck, and so that’s really what the faith community is,” says Karen Carson, pastor of Mackey Chapel Methodist Church. “We partner together so that we do our best as churches throughout the whole city to come together to help those people in need.”
Homelessness has been what many would say an eyesore in the Odessa community, and this Methodist Church, along with 13 other local churches want to do as much as they can to help.
“Sometimes you look at a problem, and it is too big, and you think the man we can’t do anything about that,” says Greg Morris, president of Odessa Ministerial Alliance. “Well, we can help this one we can help this family so one family at a time we are going to help solve the homeless issue here in Odessa.”
It’s Lent season, so with this church, they meet each week on Wednesday for collection.
“The funds go to being able to feed them and possibly help them along the way,” Carson says. “It is part of the services opportunities that churches and other organizations have with family promise in order to help them mobilize and move as a family unit.”
The ministry says when a family becomes homeless, it is hard for them to stay together, so their mission is to help those family to stay united and provide the guidance that they need.
“I think that’s a problem in our world is that too many times, we’re all about criticism and not about finding some small way that we can help.”
