Local News

ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – Odessa Regional Medical Center, Medical Center Hospital and the Ector County Health Department are prepared to provide another update on their COVID-19 response ahead of the holiday weekend.

The update comes as case counts continue to surge locally.

Just one case was confirmed on Monday, nine were confirmed Tuesday, six Wednesday and four Thursday, and another two Friday accounting for 22 new cases in total.

The total case count for Ector County, as of Friday morning, is 136, after officials confirmed two new cases Friday morning.

There was some good news on the COVID-19 front this week.

Several communities in West Texas announced parks and other public spaces will begin to reopen starting today. This falls in line with the Governor’s plan to reopen the Texas economy.

Several businesses will be allowed to open their doors today, while others will be allowed to increase capacity.

Additionally, Gov. Abbott announced earlier this week that three cases of Remdesivir will be sent to hospitals in Midland and Odessa to help fight the spread of Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, The City of Odessa says Odessa Fire/Rescue is already well underway in testing local nursing homes.

However, with the economy reopening and Memorial Day ahead, local health experts are asking the public to be cautious as they make their weekend plans.

Doctors continue to stress the importance of wearing a mask and adhering to social distancing policies.
