ODESSA, Texas (ABC Big 2/FOX 24) – The Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has a new CEO and he wants to make sure the chamber is here for the community.

“I’m trying to do the job you know,” new CEO, Paul Garza said. “It’s going well, I’m enjoying it.”

Garza is a native Odessan who served on the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s board before becoming CEO. His biggest goal is to make sure local Hispanic businesses get the help they may need during these uncertain times.

“For me, the most important part for the Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is to get back to our roots, which is servicing the local community,” Garza said. ” We want to make sure we are doing everything in our part to help you know businesses across the board.”

And by doing that, the chambers said it’s aiming to provide local Hispanic businesses with help on how to apply for the Payroll Protection Program. Garza said this is really important since so many local businesses have struggled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I can only imagine that some business owners that only speak Spanish,” Garza said. “A lot of these resources with the PPP, there’s a lack of that bilingual information and I think that’s one of the opportunities we have to build that bridge.”

But other than helping Hispanic businesses, Garza also wants to rebuild the chamber’s respect in the community.

“There’s a perception that the chamber was not doing its job,” Garza said. “That’s one of the biggest things is that we need to make sure that we’re following through the commitments that we’re promising to members.”

Garza said there a lot of challenges ahead, but he’s looking to making progress in Odessa.

“Not only me personally but the chamber as an organization as we rebuild this as an organization that is really trusted.”
