ODESSA, Texas (ABC Big 2 / FOX 24) – Many people in the Basin celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday. While many said they were happy to get back to some sort of normal during the pandemic, people were also making sure to keep themselves safe.
From mariachi bands to folklorico dances, Cinco de Mayo festivities were in full swing in downtown Odessa. The Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was among the groups that hosted a mixer at the Marriott hotel.
“I think that people are ready to get out, they’re vaccinated and they’re just ready to get out and celebrate,” Sondra Eoff.
Many people came out to have good time not only at the hotel but at other local bars and restaurants, Odessa Police has urged everyone to be safe when getting behind the wheel.
“Just one is too many whether it’s just one serious crash, one fatal crash, one is too many so just remember to be responsible, there are so many alternatives. Call Uber or call a responsible friend,” said Cpl. Steve Lesueur with the Odesa Police Department.
While safety was a top priority, Cinco de Mayo was also a time to highlight the hispanic culture.
“It’s just meeting people I think that one of the most fun parts about events like this,” said Paul Garza, CEO of the Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.” Just meeting people that have come out that have maybe have never come out before.”
And getting to meet new people for Cinco de Mayo is helping people here in the basin get back to some sort of normal.
“We want to celebrate, we want to create a family, we want to be able to embrace our heritage.” said Delma Chavez. ” And what a better way than to be outdoors, to able to have some of the COVID behind us.”
