Midland antique store targeted in brazen theft

MIDLAND, Texas (Nexstar) – The search continues for a brazen thief, who was caught on camera stealing from a Midland store.

“It appears that he has been in before, from looking at his actions from the security cam,” said Jason Morrison, co-owner of Kingsway Antiques and Collectibles on W. Illinois Ave. “The person came in, and kind of cased the place.”

Jason says the thief stole from a dealer’s jewelry case in the store.

“So, when he came in, he went straight to that case, looked inside it, walked to the bathroom and came back out. He cased it around a little bit, watching our movements and went back over there,” said Morrison.

Jason says the suspect waited around while some of the staff were unloading deleveries. Then, video shows the man open the glass jewelry case and reach inside. Jason says the man had to break the lock.

At one point, it appears the man was spooked. He gets up, and acts as if he is looking for something else.

“He went right back over there, ducked down, and grabbed the ring first,” said Morrison.

I’m told the suspect was able to get away with some valuables, including antique Mexican currency, jewelry, and something called a “mourning ring.”

Jason says the ring dates back to the 1700s and honors somebody who has died. It was valued at 700 dollars by a dealer.

“As a small business, especially during Covid, we’re struggling to survive. Thankfully, this hasn’t happened very often with us,” Morrison said. “We rarely ever have a theft.”

Going forward, Jason says the business will be on the lookout. But, most important, they want their items back.

“Theft negatively impacts all businesses. We want the guy caught.”
