MIDLAND, Texas (Nexstar) – According to a press release the Midland County Sheriff’s Office and Midland County District’s Attorney’s Office is undergoing a criminal investigation regarding abuse and neglect of children at the migrant facility.
“The concern of potential predators entering the Midland facility reached a point that the Midland County Sheriff’s Office and the Midland County District Attorney’s Office offered to conduct proper background checks for individuals providing direct care to the children,” says Laura A. Nodolf, Midland County District Attorney.
The announcement comes a few hours after Gov. Greg Abbott discussed allegations of abuse in San Antonio, Wednesday afternoon.
“The Biden administration opened the borders and failed to plan for the influx of unaccompanied children crossing the border, and now we are faced with our worst fears-allegations of child abuse and neglect,” said Governor Abbott.”
Midland County District Attorney Laura Nodolf now says the similar allegations and concerns are being raised at the Midland facility.
“Concerns that the children at the Midland location were subject to abuse and neglect have been expressed by local law enforcement, state, and federally elected officials directly to HHS/ORR with no answers,” Nodolf said in the release. “The concern of potential predators entering the Midland facility reached a point that the Midland County Sheriff’s Office and the Midland County District Attorney’s Office offered to conduct proper background checks for individuals providing direct care to the children. That offer was rejected by HHS on March 31st, 2021. Since then, the Midland County Sheriff’s Office and the Midland County District Attorney’s Office have been faced with allegations that have resulted in an ongoing criminal investigation. These allegations have also been reported to the Office of the Inspector General for HHS.”
