Mayor David Turner considering mask mandate
ODESSA, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – MCH and ORMC held a conference to update the Odessa community on COVID-19.
One of the biggest takeaways from the conference is Mayor David Turner is ‘strongly considering’ mandating face coverings.
Turner stated the City Attorney is currently writing a draft ordinance.
“We are very concered about the numbers that are showing up in the hospitals,” says Turner. “We are not seeing masks wore at the same amount that other communities are.”
Turner says one of the things that also concerns him is the number of positive cases growing fast compared to other communities such as Lubbock.
ORMC Chief Medical Officer Rohith Saravanan stating it’s important that the community stands right now in controlling the disease process.
Saravanan said earlier this week if the trend continues to move up the way it is hospitals will be at full capacity and have to dive into their surge plan.
“We all are going to take some level of accountability,” says Saravanan.
He reiterates his two points, social contract and education of repercussions. Following these two points will help keep the community safe and open, he says.
As Texas continues to move forward and is not slowing down nor scaling back on reopening, Doctor Timothy Benton wants the community to learn how to be more careful with each other.
“Reinforce again, how important it is that we keep our distance,” says Benton.
