Local News

MIDLAND, Texas (ABC Big 2 / FOX 24) – Some people have been without a job for months or even more. A hiring event was held at the La Hacienda Event Center of Wednesday and more than 20 companies were on the hunt for new employees.

“I’ve got a few applications in and I’ve got a few online that I got to do,” said Jennie Munoz, who’s looking for a new job.

Munoz has been unemployed for the last six months because of COVID-19, she wants to get back on her feet.

With unemployment at over 8% in the Permian Basin, many are hoping to get a new job to recover what they lost from the pandemic.

“I believe we might get back soon but as it is I’m looking for something to do you know I have to pay bills,” said Ibukun Bowale.

And with Gov. Gregg Abbott ending COVID-19 benefits, companies are encouraging Texans to apply for work or even starting your own line of work.

“We’ve got to start creating our own wealth and your own currency,” said Angel Garcia with Bam Consulting. “That’s why it’s currency we’ve got to get it moving and flowing and the only way to do that is get to work.”

But hiring events like this one are not only helping locals. It is also helping to fill some job gaps.

“We just want to be able to help the community,” said Gwen with Townsquare Media. “These local companies are hurting because they don’t have enough employees to operate really.”

And job seekers hope they can meet those companies needs.

“I’m still going to check some more places so hopefully I get something before I leave.”

People can still apply to the companies at that were at Wednesday’s hiring event. You can head to LoneStar923.com
