Local church taking donations for children at migrant facility

MIDLAND, Texas (ABC Big 2/FOX 24) – The migrant children being held in Midland are getting some much-needed help from a local church.

Connection Christian Church has been collecting donations to help those migrant children and it’s happy to see people from across the Basin coming together to help.

“We knew that when we heard that there were homeless kids coming into the region. We knew we wanted to be a part of making sure that we can be an expression of love, to give them care,” Dr. Joe Weaks.

Weaks with Connection Christian Church in Odessa says his congregation is keeping in touch with national volunteers who are taking care of the migrant children.

Weaks says they’re in need.

“The most menial kind of pass the time kids activities, a few basic crafts, yarn to make friendship bracelets, you know, these kids can do to pass their time putting together some supplies where they can do some paper mache projects, things like this,” said Weaks.

So far the church has heard from a lot of people who want to donate.

“We’ve had dozens of individuals and groups who have reached out and connected with us, wanting to be a part of that effort. So, ongoing we will have an opportunity to do that,” Weaks stated.

The church has already started collecting supplies to do fun activities.

Weaks hopes it will make a dark situation turn a little brighter for the migrant children.

“Our hope is that they know that they are not suffering alone. We want them to know that there are people who care for them as they are because they are children of God as well,” Weaks explained.

Pastor Weaks tells us the church will send it’s first batch of donations in the next couple of days.
