ODESSA, TX (Big 2/ Fox 24) – Drivers will hit the road this week to visit loved ones for Thanksgiving, TxDot urges to keep some safety tips in mind.
Gene Powell, a public information officer of TxDot, says the biggest dangers during the holidays can be drowsy driving, driving under the influence, and being distracted.
“If the weather comes in, just remember that the speed limit is for premium driving conditions,” says Powell. ” We’re in a hurry to get where we’re going, and all of those different things can lead to a catastrophic crash, and we don’t want that to happen.”
Breann Lara, a mechanic of Al’s Complete Auto Repair, says to not hit the road until you check your car.
“Make sure you have a spare tire in case of a flat,” she says. “Always make sure your wipers are good in case you run into some rain.”
Weather aside, Powell says there are other dangers to be aware of as well.
“If it’s a seven-hour drive, that’s a long time behind the wheel without a break, so make sure that you’re stopping every 100 miles,” Powell says. “Get out and walk around get some fresh air don’t let highway hypnosis sink in keep yourself refreshed best to have a partner drive too and take turns and that way you can have a break from driving.”
