ECTOR COUNTY, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – The Ector County Coliseum is calling all cowboys and cowgirls. Bigger and better than ever, the 2020 Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo is back from January 3rd to January 11th.
“It’s a little crazy. It’s a lot to take in, but it’s worth it,” said Brikayli Kenney. “I love that it’s a family atmosphere. All the rodeo contestants, they’re going against each other, but they’re also there for each other and root each other on.”
This go-getter 19-year-old will be representing Gardendale in the Women’s Barrel Racing competition. She says she knew she wanted to be a part of the rodeo community since she was eight years old, especially growing up watching her parents.
“They steered away from it, and whenever we got old enough, we got into it. Walking into the arena, I hope they know that I’m from here, and I hope they know rodeo is… a big part of my life.”
Vice President, Gary Don McCain, says this year’s preparations are well underway. He says the competition, and the crowd, will only continue to grow.
“As a matter of fact, we had a local cowboy rope the first calf in this building back in 1955 on the old turf,” explained McCain. “There’s a lot of history here.”
Whether this is not your first rodeo, or you are a big-time rookie, McCain says there is something for everyone.
“Coming off the holidays, I think people are ready to unwind a little bit and come have some fun. You won’t see the same thing twice. I think everybody loves bull riding. They come out and they’re pretty excited. Start off with bull riding as the very first event, and it will also close the rodeo as the last event.”
