MIDLAND, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) – The Basin Saw it’s first cochlear implant this week. It’s a procedure that helps people with extreme hearing loss.
This was the very first time it was done in the Permian Basin.
A cochlear implant is an internal hearing aid. In the past patients had to travel out of town to get the implant.
“So there’s a lot of people who have cochlear implants that live here and they have to drive several hours to have any services done, so we finally have a surgeon in the area that’s doing them, so that brings it closer to home so with him being able to do the surgery and the implants and stuff afterwords, now we’re bringing it all home,” says Audiologist Sally Miranda.
Doctors familiar with the procedure say a local surgeon can do the implants as well as follow ups right here in the Permian Basin.
